Due to the presence of toxic metals, dumping of heavy oil fly ash (HOFA) is causing ever-growing environmental problem including the pollution of air, water and soil. The present study investigates the possible environmental impacts associated with the land disposal of HOFA generated in the power plant. Different modeling and laboratory analysis were integrated to address the real environmental problems. Leaching behavior of heavy metals within the HOFA were investigated by laboratory batch leaching tests, which confirmed that most of the toxic elements in the HOFA can easily leach into the environment with rain water. The level of atmospheric dust surrounding a HOFA dumping site was predicted using the Industrial Source Complex (ISC3) air dispersion model, and the results indicated that the dumping of HOFA could be a potential hazard for local air quality. The study also revealed different reuse options of HOFA. The characteristic analysis confirmed HOFA can be used as a natural adsorbent to remove pollutants from wastewater or as soil stabilizing material by blending with cement.  相似文献

The benthic boundary layer transport (bblt) model was widely used in the Atlantic Canadian offshore region to assess the potential impact zones from drilling wastes discharges from offshore oil and gas drilling. The current version of the bblt uses a single-class settling velocity scenario, which may affect its performance, as settling velocity is size, shape, and material dependent. In this study, the effects of settling velocity on bblt predictions were assessed by replacing this single-class settling velocity scenario with a multi-class size-dependent settling velocity scenario. The new scenario was used in a hypothetical study to simulate the dispersion of barite and fine-grained drilling cuttings. The study showed that the effects of settling velocity on bblt predictions are spatial, temporal, and material dependent.  相似文献

Near-shore surface sediment was collected from five stations off Redang Island located on the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Freeze-dried sediments were Soxhlet extracted and then fractionated using column chromatography into aliphatic and polar fractions. Determination of these fractions was carried out using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The concentration of total resolved aliphatic hydrocarbons in sediments ranged from 157 to 308 ng/g. The distribution of aliphatic fraction showed the presence of n-alkanes ranging from nC15 to nC33 with a minor odd-to-even predominance exhibiting carbon maximum, depending on station, at nC17, nC26, nC29 or nC31. Calculation of Carbon Preference Index (CPI) for CPI15–33 gave values ranging from 1.09 to 1.46. n-Alkanol in all sediment exhibits even-to-odd carbon predominance ranging from nC16 to nC28 and maximising at nC22. n-Fatty acids distribution ranged from nC14 to nC24 with a dominant maximum at nC16 and exhibiting high values of short chain fatty acids (≤nC20) to long chain fatty acids (>nC20) ratios. Unsaturated fatty acids, particularly nC16:1 and nC18:1 is also ubiquitous in all samples. Cholesterol is the most abundant compound amongst the sterol group ranging from 42.8 to 62.6 % of the total sterols. β-Sitosterol, brassicasterol and stigmasterol, are also present but of relatively lower amount. These observations suggest that the aliphatic lipids and sterols in the study area originate, mainly, from biogenic sources of marine microbial with minor contribution from epiticular waxes of terrestrial plants.  相似文献

Biomineralization, biosilicification in particular (i.e. the formation of biogenic silica, SiO2), has become an exciting source of inspiration for the development of novel bionic approaches following “nature as model”. Siliceous sponges are unique among silica forming organisms in their ability to catalyze silica formation using a specific enzyme termed silicatein. In this study, we review the present state of knowledge on silicatein-mediated “biosilica” formation in marine sponges, the involvement of further molecules in silica metabolism and their potential application in nanobiotechnology and medicine. Phytoremediation is an emerging technology for the detoxification and remediation of organic pollutants such as pentachlorophenol (PCP). To investigate the dissipation behavior of PCP in the aerobic-anaerobic interfaces established by the rhizosphere of rice ( L.) root, a glasshouse experiment was conducted using a specially designed rhizobox. The possible biogeochemical mechanisms were also studied through illustration of the dynamic behavior of important electron acceptors and donors that are potentially involved in the reductive dechlorination and aerobic catabolism processes of PCP. The soil was spiked with 20 ± 0.25 and 45 ± 0.25 mg of PCP kg soil. Soil in the rhizobox was divided into five different compartments at various distances from the root surface. Maximum dissipation of PCP in planted soil was observed at 3-mm distance from the root zone as well as rapid changes in concentrations of sulfate, chloride, nitrate, and ammonium at the same distance from the root. In contrast, in the unplanted soil, no difference was observed in the PCP concentration with increasing distance. After 45 d, a significantly higher concentration of PCP was degraded in planted soil compared with unplanted soil. In the unplanted microcosms, about 45% of the initial PCP was lost at both low and high added rates, respectively. This was, proportionately, a significantly smaller percentage compared with the planted rhizosphere (an average of 66 and 64.5%, respectively). Moreover, the correlations of PCP dissipation with SO, NO, and Fe were significantly negative, while the correlations of PCP dissipation with NH, Fe, and Cl were significantly positive. This suggested the oxidization of soil constituents can inhibit aerobic catabolism of PCP by consuming O, and the reduction of soil constituents can inhibit anaerobic reductive dechlorination of PCP. Therefore, the significance of the rhizosphere in phytoremediation of chlorinated compounds such as PCP differs significantly between wetland and rainfed systems.  相似文献
